Maria Sakkari v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

Sakkari and Kontaveit have met seven times in main draws before this. The Greek has a narrow 4-3 lead, with their last outing at the 2021 WTA Madrid Open in straight sets. On hard courts, the head-to-head is tied at 2-2, making this first-round match on Saturday finely poised.

Sakkari, the Lone Greek In the Women’s Field

Maria Sakkari is Greece’s only representative in the women’s singles tennis tournament. Making her first appearance at the Olympics along with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the men’s section, the pair have become a nationwide treasure.

It is not inconceivable that Greece – which is not a prominent tennis country – could potentially have two gold medalists in tennis at the end of the fortnight.

However, Sakkari has an incredibly treacherous route to reach the gold medal match. A meeting against the World No. 28 Anett Kontaveit is one of the toughest first-rounders she could have drawn. The likes of Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina are also lurking in her section.

Sakkari has enjoyed an unprecedented run of brilliant results this year, culminating in her first Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open where she came within a point of reaching the final.

She has beaten the likes of Naomi Osaka, Sofia Kenin, Iga Swiatek and Garbine Muguruza en route to 22 match wins in 2021.

Kontaveit Carries Estonian Hopes

For a country with a population of fewer than two million people, Estonia has accumulated about 34 medals in total at the Olympic games. Most of them spread across sports such as wrestling, weightlifting, and athletics.

Tennis has been outpaced in terms of popularity and prominence, but one player is looking to change that in Tokyo. 25-year-old Anett Kontaveit, the lone Estonian in the draw is eyeing another Puig-like moment to establish herself as a sports stalwart in her country.

Kontaveit has been ranked as high as World No. 14, and enjoyed a rapid rise under her previous coach Nigel Sears who set her on course to win her first and thus far only title on the lawns of Hertogenbosch.

She nearly repeated the feat last month at Eastbourne, but fell to an inspired Jelena Ostapenko in the championship match. The World No. 28 arrives in Tokyo on the back of a first-round defeat to Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon.

Sakkari v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

Sakkari and Kontaveit are two of the finest for their respective countries right now. Both players strike the ball immaculately and forcefully. Kontaveit has a cracking heavy forehand, while Sakkari will look to inject pace with her searing double-hander. This should be a closer affair than their recent meeting in Madrid.
