Cilic Playing in His Second Olympics

This will be the second Olympics for the Croat. In Rio, he competed in both the singles and the doubles, reaching the round of 16 in the former and the second round in the layer.

That was two years after he won the US Open, and he went on to reach the final of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He has 18 career titles to his name and, at his peak was ranked number three in the world.

However, several years of indifferent form have seen him slide down the rankings.

Cilic though has recently arrested the slide, winning his first singles titles in three years, beating Felix Augur-Aliassime on the grass of Stuttgart. He went on to reach the quarter-final at Queen’s and the third round of Wimbledon, where his run was ended by Daniil Medvedev.

Menezes Enters as a Rank Outsider

Menezes has a career high ATP world ranking of 172, achieved in February last year before lockdown.

The previous year he won a gold medal form Brazil competing at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, defeating Tomas Barrios of Chile in the final.

The 24-year old spends the vast majority of his time on the junior circuits, where he has won 8 ITF titles  and one solitary Challenger tournament, on clay last in Romania last November.

The only time that Menezes managed to qualify for the main draw of an ATP event this year was in Cordoba, where he was knocked out by compatriot Thiago Monteiro in the first round

His last event was the qualifying competition for Wimbledon, where he again failed to get beyond the first round,

This will be, by far, the most prestigious competition he has ever entered.

Cilic v Menezes Prediction and Tip

This is a complete mismatch, at least on paper, between and former Grand Slam winner and top three player against a man wholly inexperienced at this level. Cilic should breeze through.
