Donna Vekic v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

It’s a rivalry that dates back to 2012 and one where neither has been able to dominate. Both have won four matches each from their previous eight encounters.

Vekic Looking to Get Back to Pre-Surgery Levels

After a terrific 2019, Donna Vekic has endured two tough seasons. She was 8-11 in 2020 and is 7-7 so far this year. Not that she has had enough opportunities this season – she didn’t feature in any tournament between the Australian Open and the French Open, undergoing a surgery on her right knee.

The 25-year-old made a slow comeback from injury but a 4-3 grass season is an indicator that she is getting her form back.

Ranked 47th in the world, the Croatian thrives on grass courts but has a pretty good record on hard courts as well and was very impressive in the first major of the year, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career. She was also a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019 and is 1-4 from her five hard court finals on the tour.

Vekic has a difficult path ahead of her in Tokyo: If she manages to get past Caroline Gacia, she could be up against the third seed Aryna Sabalenka in the next round.

Garcia Coming off a Strong Lausanne Showing

This will be Caroline Garcia’s second Olympics. She represented France in 2016 in Rio, winning her first round match with ease but falling to Johanna Konta in the next.

The former World No. 4 has struggled for consistency this year and heads to Tokyo with an overall record of 16-16. However, a run to the semifinals in Lausanne last week would have been a huge confidence booster ahead of the Summer Games. It will be interesting to see if she can carry the clay form to the hard courts of Tokyo.

A seven-time champion and three-time runner-up on the tour, Garcia has won titles on all surfaces and is 3-2 from hard court finals, but a major cause for concern for the 27-year-old is the fact that she has not made it to a final since 2019 and has seen a constant dip in her rankings.

She isn’t seen as a contender for a podium finish in Tokyo, and will have to raise her level by a couple of notches to pose a real challenge to the strong field.

Vekic v Garcia Prediction and Tip

Six of their eight previous meetings have seen a third set and Garcia has never beaten the Croatian in straight sets. Given their history one can expect to see another match going the distance.
