Millman in Poor Form

John Millman has some good memories of playing in Japan, as he reached one of his three ATP finals in Tokyo in 2019. He couldn’t finish the job though going down to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

The 32-year-old Australian returns to Tokyo with hopes of pulling off a similar performance but the competition is way too tough at the Olympics and his form has been dismal the entire season.

Millman, who captured his maiden title in Nur Sultan last year, has a woeful 10-16 record in 2021, which includes just one quarterfinal appearance – a stat that the World No. 44 won’t be proud of.

With losses outweighing wins this season, Millman’s chances of making a deep run look bleak. In fact going past the first round will be a huge challenge as he faces the rising young star of tennis, Lorenzo Musetti.

Musetti Continues to Impress

In stark contrast to Millman, 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti has been in sensational form.

The Italian began the year as World No. 129, but has steadily moved up the rankings following a host of massive wins.

The biggest of them all was a run to the fourth round of the French Open on his Grand Slam debut and he almost caused the upset of the year, by taking the first two sets of Djokovic in the Round of 16, but eventually ran out of gas after the Serb turned the tables by turning on the style.

What’s been most impressive about Musetti is his ability to lift his game against the more accomplished, higher-ranked players and not getting overawed by the stature of his opponents.

He has made it to two semifinals this year, in Acapulco and Lyon, going down to Stefanos Tsitsipas on both the occasions, but it’s the players that he knocked out en route the semifinals that has caught the attention of the world.

Musetti defeated Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov in Acapulco and Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sebastian Korda and Aljaz Bedene in Lyon. Add to that wins over Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori in Rome last year and David Goffin at Roland Garros this year and you know that a future star has arrived and is here to stay.

Millman v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Millman is the higher-ranked player, but Musetti will be the favourite to advance. He is a player in better form and will be hoping to make a mark on his Olympic debut. Expect the Italian to move into the next round.
