Tiafoe Will Look to Draw Inspiration from Tsitsipas Win

Inconsistency has been a cause of concern for Frances Tiafoe. Following the successes of 2018 and 2019, Tiafoe has experienced a dip in form, but each time disappointments begin to mount, he pulls off a stroke of brilliance to make his presence felt.

Case in point, his shock win over Roland Garros finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round at Wimbledon. No one saw that coming, but the American had other ideas and it was not a hard-fought win, but a straight sets rout.

Last year, he made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open against expectations. This year he did that in Miami before pulling off the stunner in Wimbledon.

A pretty good hard court player, the 23-year-old comes to Tokyo with a 14-13 overall record and 7-5 on hard courts this year.

Kwon In Decent Form

A first tour-level semifinal, a third round debut in a Grand Slam and two quarterfinal finishes – fair to say, South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon has had a great season so far and he got a bit of assistance from luck as well.

At Eastbourne, he lost the first qualifying round to a player ranked 1,113, but given the number of pullouts, he got an entry into the main draw as lucky loser. What’s more, he even received a first-round bye, beginning his tournament from the second round, but once he settled into rhythm he got two wins in a row to reach a first tour-level semifinal.

Earlier, Kwon, who is 11-11 so far this year, had made it to the quarterfinals in Singapore and Marbella. He was also impressive at Roland Garros, reaching the third round of a major for the first time in his career.

Tiafoe v Kwon Prediction and Tip

This should be a hard-fought battle with the American edging out the South Korean.
