Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head
The two players have met just once previously – a final-round meeting in WTA Linz in 2015. Pavlyuchenkova won that match in straight sets.

Pavlyuchenkova Storms Past Errani
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, representing the Russian Olympic Committee at the Tokyo Games, kickstarted her bid for the gold medal with a clinical 6-0, 6-1 win over Sara Errani.
It was nothing short of a warning shot to the rest of the players in her field that she is a serious contender for the medal spots. The 30-year-old, currently ranked World No. 18, had a career-defining run in the French Open as she defeated the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka en route to the final.
Despite falling to Barbora Krejcikova, it was the Russian’s maiden singles Grand Slam final and she couldn’t be happier with that performance. In the preceding tournament of the Madrid Open, she was also a semifinalist.
Having moved back into the top 20 on the heels of an impressive clay swing, Pavlyuchenkova then featured in Eastbourne and Wimbledon but failed to emulate her Paris run. Her best result came in London in the form of a third-round appearance against Karolina Muchova.
Nonetheless, 2021 remains one of the best years for her on the WTA Tour as she now looks to go further by getting an elusive medal in the Olympic Games.

Friedsam Stuns Watson
Anna-Lena Friedsam defeated Heather Watson of Great Britain 7-6(5), 6-3 in what has proved to be a largely unexpected outcome. The German arrived in Tokyo on the back of a lacklustre season and form on the tour.
Up until her win against Watson, Friedsam was on a four-match losing streak stitched across the Bett1Open, Wimbledon, Hamburg European Open, and Ladies Open Lausanne.
In fact, keeping aside her second-round runs in WTA Stuttgart and WTA Parma, the 27-year-old has never made it past the opening rounds in any other event on the tour this season.
Moreover, her current ranking of #119 says all there is about her ongoing form.
Pavlyuchenkova v Friedsam Prediction and Tip
Pavlyuchenkova, given her overall form, experience, and season, will start as the favourite. Expect her to reach the third round comfortably.
