Gasquet Needs Three Sets against Altmaier

It wasn’t the easiest semifinal win for Gasquet but in the end he came through against Daniel Altmaier to enter the final of this tournament. It will be his first appearance in an ATP final since July 2018, having last reached there in July 2018.

Gasquet was a 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3 winner over Altmaier, in a match that lasted three hours and 12 minutes and was anyone’s for the taking till the very end.

Four breaks of serves punctuated the first set, pushing it into the tie-breaker which Gasquet won easily, having earlier missed two set-points in the 12th game on his opponent’s serve.

He saved two more early in the second set and two more in the eighth game but fell off the fifth to surrender the set to his opponent. The decider went to serve till the fifth game when Gasquet broke to go 4-2 up before rounding off to clinch the match off the first match-point he got.

Things will get tougher in this final though as he takes on a player who has grown in stature at the age of 18.

Alcaraz in Maiden ATP Final

While the difference in the experience between these two players couldn’t have been starker, Alcaraz looks to have come into this final with a lot more quality than Gasquet. And that shows in how the bookmakers rate him – he starts off a heavy favourite at 3/10 to win this.

Why is that so despite being only 18 years of age and having never played an ATP final before?

It’s his results on clay this year.

Across different stages of ATP tournaments and Challenger competitions, Alcaraz has won 21 of his 27 matches on this surface which includes four solid wins in Umag too.

He overcame the loss of the first set to defeat Lucas Pouille, sent Andrej Martin out in straight sets, overcame Filip Krajinovic in the quarterfinal and in his most recent showing crushed Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 7-6 (3).

With form and fitness behind him, Alcaraz could be one of the players to watch in the times to come and who knows, it’s at Umag he plants that first flag, that of his maiden title.
