The last time he played on hard courts, he clinched his first ATP 1000 title. Now back on the same surface, Hubert Hurkacz is off to a solid start at the Olympics.
The seventh seed Pole needed just 62 minutes to dispatch his first round opponent, Australia’s Luke Saville. Hurkacz didn’t face a break point in the contest, while he got a break in each set to advance with a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Winning a total of 93% first serve points, the World No. 12 won 84% of his service points, while making just 11 unforced errors to his opponent’s 22.
A player who thrives on hard courts, Hurkacz has been fascinating to watch this season. He began the year by winning the Delray Beach Open title and then went on to win biggest title of his career in Miami.
Hurkacz had a quiet clay season, his least preferred surface, but got back to form on grass, making a sensational run to the semifinals of Wimbledon, defeating Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer en route. Coming in with a 20-12 overall record and 14-5 on hard courts, Hurkacz is seen as one of the contenders for a podium finish in Tokyo.

Broady Wins Three-Hour Thriller
Great Britain’s Liam Broady edged past Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in a thrilling first round contest on Sunday which lasted over three hours.
After a tight first set, which saw 11 consecutive holds before Broady got the only break to seal the set, the Briton closed in on a place in the second round with two match points at 4-5 in the second set. But the gritty Argentine fought back, saving the match points and winning the set in the tiebreak.
Broady got a break early in the deciding set and then consolidated his lead with a second break before closing out the match 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
The British left-hander, ranked 142nd in the world, has been in good form at the lower tier events this year, finishing runner-up twice on the Challenger Tour.
