Aryna Sabalenka and Donna Vekic have played each other four times, with the Croat holding a comfortable 3-1 head-to-head lead over the Belarussian.

Sabalenka Breezes Past Linette

Having the come the closest she has to lifting her maiden Grand Slam title at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Sabalenka arrived in Tokyo pregnant with hopes of turning the disappointment of missing out on covered silverware at All England into delirious joy of winning an Olympic medal for her country.

And, in a statement of intent, the current World No. 3 got her Tokyo campaign off to a rousing start on Sunday, coasting past her Polish opponent Magda Linette without even pretending exact too much out of herself.

Bringing the kind of form into the park that has seen her lift two Tour titles and record a semifinal finish at Wimbledon this year, the hard-hitting Belarussian bludgeoned her way to a comfortable lead in the opening set and win it by an emphatic 6-2 margin.

In a match that spanned a little over an hour, it was all Sabalenka as she overwhelmed her opponent with her aggressive game.

After cruising the first set, the Belarussian moved into top gear, firing winners past the hapless Linette and taking a firmer hold of the match with every point that fell into her kitty.

In a piece of statistics that showed the extent of the Belarussian’s dominance in the match, she created as many as nine breakpoint opportunities and converted two of them. Her opponent did bring up a couple points in the entire match but couldn’t cash in on any of them.

The second-set turned out to be even more lopsided as Sabalenka ran roughshod over Linette before eventually coming away with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win.

Vekic Fights Past Garcia

While Sabalenka routed Linette in her Tokyo opener, Vekic had a much tougher passage into the second round against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia on Sunday.

Currently ranked 47th in singles, the Croat hit the ground running and bossed the early exchanges against Garcia before winning the opening set 6-2 in 40 minutes.

However, just when it seemed like Vekic was poised to run away with the contest, the Frenchwoman staged a spirited fightback to take the second set to a tiebreak. Carrying the momentum into the tiebreak, Garcia opened out a commanding lead and held on it to win the second set 7-6 (7-2).

The Croat, however, turned it back her way in the decider as she got herself a decisive break of serve and closed out a 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 win to seal passage to the next round.

Sabalenka v Vekic Prediction and Tip

With Vekic leading 3-1 on head-to-head count, expect Sabalenka to go hard at her in the quest of setting the record straight.

Also, with two titles to her kitty this season, the Belarussian will be the form player going into the second-round clash on Tuesday and the odds, one suspects, would be heavier on the Croat’s side.
