Karolina Pliskova v Carla Suarez Navarro Head to Head

Pliskova has 4-3 winning record in the series, winning each of the last three metings. But these two players have not faced each other since 2018 season in Dubai.

Pliskova Routines Cornet to Advance

64 minutes was all Karolina Pliskova needed to obliterate Alize Cornet 6-1 6-3 and dashed the Frenchwoman’s hopes in an emphatic manner.

The Czech who comes to Tokyo on the back of a runner-up finish at Wimbledon quelled fears of joining the likes of Ashleigh Barty and Ons Jabeur in the parade of losing favorites on Sunday.

Pliskova produced four aces (and also four double faults), and lost just five points behind her first serve. She broke Cornet’s serve four times in a first set that was seemingly one-way traffic. In the second set, the World No. 66 gave a good account of herself despite falling a break behind in the second game.

Pliskova’s power-packed forehand was unmatched by Cornet’s resolve and battling qualities. The Czech snuffed out danger by saving a breakpoint at 4-1, and kept consolidating her lead for the remainder of the contest.

Suarez Navarro Shocks Ons Jabeur

As sporting miracles go, Carla Suarez Navarro produced an incredible and shocking win over Tunisia’s in-form star Ons Jabeur for her victory post-cancer recovery.

Suarez Navarro had been out of action for over 12 months fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma but recently returned to action at the French Open with a protected ranking. She nearly upset Sloane Stephens at Roland Garros and was subsequently beaten in her second tournament participation at Wimbledon in three sets by Ashleigh Barty.

The 32-year-old’s performances, together with her decision to end her farewell tour on high was enough to earn her a spot in Spain’s Olympic team for the fourth time.

The former World No. 6 stunned Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-4 6-1, also in 64 minutes, to book her spot in the next round. Suarez Navarro outclassed Jabeur in the shotmaking department with elegant one-hander and tactical discipline. She won 71% of first-serve points and punished Jabeur’s 28 unforced errors.

Can the Spaniard keep up this form on Monday against the fifth seed?

Pliskova v Suarez Navarro Prediction and Tip

It has been a heroic effort for Suarez Navarro to get to this point. Make no mistake about it, she beat an in-form Jabeur who just headlined the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Historically, Pliskova struggles against players with variety, but in her current form, she exudes calm and belief. We reckon she can do serious damage in the women’s draw this week.
