It was a while since Osaka last played a competitive game of tennis but that did not mean she looked any rusty in her opening round win over Shuai Zheng.
Having taken a break from tennis following her controversial stance on not interacting with the media at French Open, she then opted not to feature at Wimbledon either before finally returning to the sport in Tokyo after more than 50 days away.
That didn’t bother her though as Osaka ran through her opponent 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 29 minutes to wrap up the encounter.
Osaka broke twice in the first set to take a 4-0 lead before facing – and saving – three break-points of her own. In the second, she registered an early break, saved a couple of her own break-points and then easily served it out to march into the second round.
Given what was on display in her opener, Osaka will be gunning for an even quicker finish next.

Golubic Tames Osorio Serrano
Colombia’s Maria Osorio Serrano is 19 years old and not very old on the WTA tour either but has already climbed up to her career-best ranking of 79th in the world. That’s also why some might have given her bit of a chance against the 50th-ranked Golubic when they faced off in their opening round encounter.
Golubic gave Osorio Serrano no such chances.
In fact, in a match that lasted just over an hour, Golubic raced away to a 5-1 lead and while she was broken twice as she tried to serve for the set, she came back to break her opponent yet again to clinch the set.
Things got a lot easier in the second because when this time around Golubic did break the Colombian on two more occasions, there was no looking back for her.
The question now is if Golubic, who was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon and a finalist earlier at Monterrey, can turn the tables on the heavy favourite Osaka?
Osaka v Golubic Prediction and Tip
Despite Golubic’s form, it’s difficult to bet against Osaka but that being said we expect the Swiss player to make things slightly more difficult than was the case in her opener.
