Popyrin Hoping for a Change of Fortune

It is the first competitive match for Alexei Popyrin since his Grand Slam exploits at Wimbledon. It wasn’t all fairy tale for the young player because he was subjected to an early elimination in the First Round by Kei Nishikori. He will be hoping to build on the disappointment and advance to the next round of the Atlanta Open.

It will be a different test because the match will be on a hard court. Most of his matches this year have been on the grass and clay courts.

Popyrin’s last match on the hard was back in March at the Miami Open. In the First and Second Rounds at the tournament, he saw off Feliciano Lopez and Reilly Opelka. He had no chance against world number 2, Daniil Medvedev, in the Third Round.

In 2021 he has a record of 6-4 (win/loss) on the hard.

Johnson Hopes to Build on Los Cabos Open Form

Johnson enjoyed a good run of results at the Los Cabos. He lost in the Quarterfinals, but he will be beaming with confidence because the matches were on the hardcourt.

Before the Los Cabos Open, he had lost all his matches on the hardcourt this year. They were at the Miami Open, Abierto Mexicano Telcel – Acapulco, and Orlando Challenger. He lost to all his opponents in the First Round.

In the First Round at Los Cabos, he eliminated Gerardo López Villaseñor. The first set went to a tiebreak, in which Johnson got a mini-break when Lopez left a slice in the net to eventually win the set, 7-6 (4). He dominated the second set and closed the match 6-2 with an unforced error from Lopez.

The match in the Second Round had a similar trajectory where he powered past Yasutaka Uchiyama. Taylor Fritz was too strong for him in the quarterfinal.

Johnson has a 2-3 (win/loss) record on the hardcourt this year.

Alexei Popyrin v Steve Johnson Prediction and Tip

Johnson will hope to summon the form from his performance in the Los Cabos Open. Alexei Popryn will expect to upset his opponent, but the lack of competitive tennis on the hard since March might be a decisive factor in the match.
