Daniil Medvedev v Fabio Fognini Head to Head
The players have met four times, all on hard courts and Medvedev leads 3-1 having won the last three encounters.

Medvedev Sharp After Two Resounding Wins
After a successful end to 2020 and a strong start to 2021 Down Under, Daniil Medvedev had a bout of Covid-19 that kept him out of the early portion of the clay court season. When he returned to the clay swing, it was a dismal run at both Madrid and Rome for the world number two as he headed to Roland Garros stating that clay was not a surface he enjoyed playing on.
It was a surprisingly good run for Medvedev at the French Open, where got his act together making the quarter-finals dropping only one set and looking in good touch and happy with his groundstrokes and game. A fair run on the grass followed as he won the ATP 250 at Eastbourne, and made the round of 16 at Wimbledon, before uncharacteristically letting go of a two sets to one lead against Pole Hubert Hurkacz.
Back on the hard courts here which is his favorite surface, the Russian was pushed in the opener by Kazakh Alexander Bublik but prevailed in two tight sets and put on a clinical display against India’s Sumit Nagal to prevail in straight sets comfortably in the next round.
Looking strong and on a surface that he prefers, Medvedev will be hoping for a deep run here on, but wary of a very unpredictable next round opponent in Fabio Fognini.

Erratic Fognini In Good Touch
A nine-time champion on the tour, Fognini has had a mixed bag this season with an almost even win-loss record. Among his notable performances this year, he played for Italy in the finals at the ATP Cup, reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and was a quarterfinalist at the Monte-Carlo Open, two years after winning the title in 2019.
After a convincing straight sets win against Japanese Yuichi Sugita, the Italian was locked in a tight battle in the second round against Belarusian Egor Gerasimov.
The Italian won the first set with one break of serve to close out 6-4. Gerasimov hung in well in the second set and ensured there were no easy games for Fognini, serving and returning well himself. Fognini had to fight hard to ensure the set made its way to a tiebreak.
Fognini’s experience came to use at key moments in the breaker as he closed 7-4 to prevail in straight sets and move into the round of 16 looking confident and in a position where he can cause some dangerous opposition to the top ranked players.
Medvedev v Fognini Prediction and Tip
Medvedev starts as a favorite on paper, but Fognini’s talent cannot be discounted. It will be down to who is the better player on the day and who executes better on the big points. Expect Medvedev to pull through in a decider.
