Garbine Muguruza v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

Muguruza holds a 1-0 lead over Rybakina, last beating her in the Bett1Open in Berlin just a few weeks back in straight sets.

Veronika Kudermetova, Qiang Wang, and now Alison Van Uytvanck – these are the players that the number seven seed Garbine Muguurza has so far dispatched in the Tokyo Olympics. She has done all of it in straight sets to mark her best showing in the Olympics yet.

Muguruza has had an impressive season so far, especially on hard courts. At the start of the year, she reached the final of the Yarra Valley Classic and Qatar Open and later followed it with a title run in the Dubai Championships. In the list of players that she has beaten in these tournaments are Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari.

On clay and grass, the 27-year-old Spaniard wasn’t this phenomenal with her best result coming in Wimbledon and the Italian Open where she reached round three.

As a former World No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam finalist, she obviously has a rich pedigree and now that she is back in the top 10, the momentum and form is also on her side.

Rybakina Marches On

Elena Rybakina is the only Kazakh left in the field. Serving as a potential medal prospect for Kazakhastan, the 22-year-old defeated Donna Vekic in the third round with 7-6(3), 6-4, to keep the Olympic dream alive.

Currently ranked World No. 20, Rybakina arrived in Japan on the heels of a semifinal run in Eastbourne and a fourth-round appearance in Wimbledon. These, along with a quarterfinal run in the French Open, were among her best results on the tour in 2021.

In the first half of the season, Rybakina wasn’t this impressive with most of her campaigns ending shortly after she started in the competition.

That said, she has made great strides on the tour over the last couple of seasons, including picking five singles trophies on the tour in 2020 (four runner-ups, one winner’s). The youngster has proven her mettle on several occasions and is a formidable opponent to face on any day.

Muguruza v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

Muguruza will start as the favourite but upsets seem to be the norm here in Tokyo. She will need to be cautious and not fall prey to the upset bug.
