Elina Svitolina v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

The two players have met just twice on the tour and the tally is tied at 1-1. Their last meeting took place in 2017 in Birmingham; Giorgi was the winner there with 2-1.

Giorgi Delivering a Season-Defining Run

Camila Giorgi, so far in the Tokyo Olympics 2020, is not only yet to drop a set, but she has also beaten a few players well above her punching weight. In the first round, she defeated the American Jennifer Brady 6-3, 6-2, and built on it with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the 2016 Rio Olympics doubles gold winner Elena Vesnina.

In the third round, she met the number five seed Karolina Pliskova and stunned the Czech in straight sets to reach the quarters. That was only her third win over Pliskova in as many as eight meetings through the years.

With this kind of form, there is no doubt that she will eye another upset – this time against Svitolina. Currently ranked World No. 61, Giorgi’s performance in 2021 has primarily entailed a bunch of early-round defeats.

There are only two exceptions to this – a quarterfinal feat in the Lyon Open and the semifinal run in Eastbourne International as a qualifier (beating Aryna Sabalenka en route).

While the 29-year-old Italian hasn’t managed to retain this form and play with consistency throughout, she is proving to be a dark horse here in the Olympics.

Svitolina Survives Sakkari

World No. 6 Elina Svitolina has managed to reach the quarters in Tokyo despite losing a set in each of her preceding three matches. On Tuesday, she played Greece’s Maria Sakkari and beat her 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to carry Ukraine’s medal hopes in the Olympics Games 2020.

Looking at her season so far, Svitolina’s time on the tour has been fairly decent – she has managed to stay in the top 10 but is yet to win a singles title. She has reached the final few rounds in several big tournaments, including the Abu Dhabi Open, Gippsland Trophy, Miami Open, and Stuttgart Open but always fell just a few matches shy of the trophy.

Before the Olympics, she played in the grass events in Berlin, Eastbourne, and Wimbledon – but lost in the second round in all of them.

Like for like, she is a much superior player to Giorgi with far more trophies and prominent wins. But at this stage, as seen so many times already in Tokyo, past pedigrees do not account for much.

Svitolina v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Svitolina is a consistent player who has pretty much cemented her place in the top 10. Meanwhile, Giorgi’s best ranking is #28 while her biggest title is the Rosmalen Open. On paper, Svitolina is expected to win this match in straight sets without dropping far too many games.

But she has looked a bit rusty in Tokyo and may very well find herself in another three-setter against Giorgi.
