Liam Broady v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, on grass at Queen’s in 2017, Chardy winning in straight sets.

Broady Surprises Miami Winner

For a man who was not supposed to be playing in this tournament at all, Broady has acquitted himself very well,

He was not originally part of the British squad, but was called-up as  late replacement after Dan Evans got Covid, and has fully justified his selection.

Having defeated the Argentine clay court specialist Francisco Cerundulo in the first round, a man 25 places higher than him in the world rankings, few would have given him much chance against Hubert Hurkasz of Poland, the world number 12 and seventh seed, the current Miami Masters Champion.

And when Hurkasz broke Broady in the fourth game of the first set, everything seemed be going to plan.

Broady though, clearly had not read the script, as he broke back three games later, and then engineered a further break which he consolidated to take the set.

The second set developed into a service battle with only one break point against serve. That went to Hurkasz, and he was able to level with his fourth set point.

The decisive moment came in Hurkasz’s next service game when he was broken once more. Having got his nose in front, Broady refused to let go and kept the Pole at arm’s length for the rest of the match, for one of the best wins of his career.

Chardy Upsets Russian Seed

In contrast to Broady, Chardy has lots of experience playing in major tournaments, having won the Davis Cup with France in 2017, and reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open.

His campaign in Tokyo began with a relatively easy opener against Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vern of Chile, although the world number 194 did take him to s second set tie-break,

But then he had a big win of his own on Tuesday, defeating the Russian number 11 seed Aslan Karatsev.

Chardy was the first to drop his serve in the match and the Russian appeared to be in control before two breaks in successive service games handed the first set to the Frenchman.

However, he then dropped his serve at the start of the second set, and, although he had break-back opportunities he could not take any of them, although equally Karatsev was unable to take any of the chances to further extend his lead.

The third set went with serve until the eight game. That was when Chardy created the first two break point chances of the set, converting the second. He then served out next game.

Broady v Chardy Prediction and Tip

Chardy will start the clear favourite against a man ranked 75 places below him in the world and with little experience of playing in a major tournament such as the Olympics. Broady has done well to get this far, but this will probably be the end of his run.
