Elina Svitolina v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Svitolina holds a 3-1 lead over Vondrousova, last defeating her in the 2019 Indian Wells Open. However, in their last meeting that took place in the 2020 Rome Open, the Czech finally drew her first blood and defeated the Ukrainian 6-3, 6-0.

Svitolina Looking Confident of Securing a Medal

Newlywed Elina Svitolina is just one win away from adding yet another milestone to her already illustrious career.

She has made it to the semifinal of the Tokyo Olympics after beating the likes of Laura Siegemund, Ajla Tomljanovic, Maria Sakkari, and most recently, Camila Giorgi. Admittedly, the 26-year-old looked a bit sloppy in her opening-round bouts as she dropped a set before securing the win. But against Giorgi, Svitolina was absolutely clinical with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

This marks Svitolina’s third tournament in 2021 where she has reached the semis – the others being the Miami Open and Stuttgart Open. With that, she also was a quarterfinalist in Rome, Qatar, Melbourne, and Abu Dhabi.

A two-time WTA Finals finalist (winning the title in 2018 and settling for the runner-up trophy in 2019) and bearer of 15 WTA titles, the world number six has already built an impressive legacy and will look to add an Olympics medal to it. She is one of the most formidable players on the tour who has also reached the penultimate rounds in all four majors.

Vondrousova Carrying the Czech Hopes

As the only Czech player left in the field, 22-year-old Marketa Vondrousova will look to make her country proud by securing a medal. And in all fairness, her chances of doing so do look good.

Starting as the underdog, the World No. 42 defeated Kiki Bertens in the opener in three sets to end the Dutch’s tennis career on a heartbreaking note. Vondrousova then played Mihaela Buzarnescu and beat her 6-1, 6-2 to reach the pre-quarters.

Over there, she delivered the biggest win of her career to date by dispatching the local favourite, World No. 2 Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4. In the quarterfinal, she faced Paula Badosa and got a walkover into the semis after the Spaniard retired from the match in the second set at 3-6, 0-0.

Looking at her season so far, it becomes evident by the Czech is one of the dark horses in this year’s Olympics Games. A semifinal run in the Yarra Valley Classic and a couple of fourth-round appearances in the French Open, Miami Open, and Australian Open were among the big highlights of her year. In other tournaments, including the entirety of the grass swing, she never made it past the early rounds.
