Djokovic Victories Continue

World number one Novak Djokovic continued his bid for greater achievements in the sport, as he eyes his first Olympic gold to keep hopes of a Golden Calendar Slam alive.

Having won the Australian and French Opens as well as Wimbledon this year, the Serb continues to strive to become the first male in the sport to win all majors and the Olympic gold in the same calendar year, a feat only accomplished by Steffi Graf on the WTA tour thus far.

It has been a clinical showing by Djokovic thus far this week starting off dropping only four games against Hugo Dellien in the opener and while Jan-Lennard Struff put up a bigger challenge in the next round, it was not enough to trouble the Serb, who prevailed dropping only seven games in the match.

If the up and rising Alejandro Davidovich Fokina thought he fancied his chances of troubling the world number one, that was soon put to rest, as the world number one prevailed seamlessly again dropping just three games in the match.

Into the final eight against a familiar opponent Kei Nishikori, Djokovic is now one win away from the medal round with his aims set on the top prize here in Tokyo.

Good Run By Nishikori At Home Olympics

Kei Nishikori who was once ranked number four in the world, has had a difficult few seasons mixed with injuries, long layoffs, poor form and Covid-19 itself as he is ranked just within the top 70 in the world now.  Once ranked fourth in the world, Nishikori has suffered from injury, pandemic absence and coronavirus itself to fall to within the top 70 in the world.

The opener here was one of the highlights of his season with a very convincing win against Andrey Rublev on the Russian’s own favorite surface. The Japanese was in strong nick from the beginning and there was no looking back with a break of serve timely in each set for a 6-3,6-4 win.

The next two rounds were not without their challenges, with Nishikori dropping a set against American Marcos Giron and a break down against Ilya Ivashka in the third round, but came back strongly to win both.

The 2016 bronze medalist in Rio will be happy with his performance, but know that the competition gets as stiff as can be in the next round now.

Djokovic v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

Nishikori will be happy with how he has performed this week, but he is up against the best player in the world and an opponent who has got the better of him repeatedly for over half a decade now.

Expect the Japanese to put up a decent performance, but Djokovic should prevail in two well contested sets.
