Danielle Collins v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

Collins Captures First WTA Title

Just a few months ago Danielle Collins’ tennis career was at a standstill. Collins was battling endometriosis –  a painful disorder affecting the female organ. She would only return to action after undergoing a surgical procedure to remove a cyst that the American was quoted saying resembled ”the size of a tennis ball”.

That happened shortly after playing the Miami Open at the end of March, and her return date was expected to be towards the end of May, in time for the French Open.

Collins was unsure of such rapid progress, but her doctors were adamant she would be able to play so soon. Her miraculous recovery in such a short space of time has rarely been talked about.

She won a rollercoaster three-set match in the first round in Paris, and went on to reach the third round, almost exceeding pretournament expectations – losing to Serena Williams.

However, it is the results that followed which have put years of agony behind her and a smile back on her face. She reached the semifinals in Budapest, denied passage by an arm injury that caused her to retire. But there were no ill-effects as she romped to win her first WTA title in Palermo without dropping a set.

Rogers Set For San Jose Debut

Making her tournament debut, and Collins’ first-round opponent will be fellow American Shelby Rogers. The 28-year-old from South Carolina hasn’t struck a ball since losing the third round of Wimbledon to Elena Rybakina.

Rogers has blown hot and cold this season, which has made it slightly difficult to gauge her levels of improvement. She made a pair of quarterfinals at the Yara Valley Classic and Adelaide, and advanced to the second week of the Australian Open. Her record Down Under was a solid 8-3, beaten twice by World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and Coco Gauff.

But in between until her recent third-round showing at SW19, Rogers’ form was modest, to say the least. There were four first-round exits from eight tournaments. She did not manage to string back-to-back wins during her stay in Europe until Wimbledon.

The unseeded Rogers will play in her first match in nearly a month.

Collins v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Neither Collins nor Rogers were selected by the USTA to compete at the Olympic games. For Collins, it opened the door for a maiden WTA title. Rogers, on her part, has had time to fine-tune her game back home.

This is a very evenly-matched tie. Collins is the form player, but Rogers’ hard-court record this season cannot be ignored too.
