The two have never met previously at any level.

Pospisil Is 4-8 in 2021

Two final appearances last year, one at the start of the season in Montpellier, and the other at the back end in Sofia, Bulgaria, had raised expectations from the Canadian to touch greater heights this year. But 2021 is turning out to be an extremely difficult year for Pospisil.

The 31-year-old heads to Washington with a 4-8 overall record, having made the last eight just once in Eastbourne.

His struggles on clay and grass are not unknown, but a 1-4 return from the hard-court tournaments in the first quarter is a cause cause of concern for the World No. 61.

Pospisil hasn’t played since his first round exit in Newport. It will be interesting to see how he begins his North American hard court season.

Gomez Beats Broady to Qualify

Emilio Gomez has qualified for just his second main draw of the season. The Ecuadorean defeated Australia’s Matthew Ebden 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifying round and then knocked out Britain’s Liam Broady, who was coming off a strong showing at the Olympics, in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Winning 80 percent of his first-serve points, converting two of two break points and saving three of four, Gomez knocked out the Briton 6-4, 7-6 (7-0).

The Ecuadorean doesn’t have too much of experience on the tour, but has been a tough opponent to beat at the Challenger level. He has featured in two Challenger finals this year, winning the Salinas-2 hard court tournament in April and finishing runner-up in Little Rock in June, also a hard-court event.

On the tour, he has made just one main draw appearance this year, in Los Cabos, defeating Nicolas Mejia in the first round but falling to Alex Bolt in the next.

There are not much expectations from the World No. 165 in Washington, but Gomez will sense an opportunity against the struggling Pospisil in the first round, particularly after winning both his qualifying rounds with ease.

Pospisil v Gomez Prediction and Tip

Pospisil will be hoping to return to form but can expect a tough fight from the Ecuadorean, who has dominated the qualifying rounds. So expect a hard-fought battle with Pospisil advancing.
