Opelka Skips the Olympics

Opelka was one of the players who decided to skip the Olympics, although he would have been an automatic choice for the American team otherwise, as he is currently there highest ranked player.

Washington should suit his style – along with the Ivo Karlovic he is the record tallest ever ATP ranked player, and is known for his powerful serving.

Both his two previous senior titles – the New York Open in 2019 and Delray Beach last year – have come on similar surfaces.

However, although not known as a clay court player, he has enjoyed relative success on it this year, particularly at the Rome Masters where he got to the semi-finals before losing to Rafael Nadal.

He also reached the third round at the French Open, before Daniil Medvedev ended his run.

Opelka’s most recent tournament was in Atlanta last week where he got to the second round, losing then to compatriot Taylor Fritz.

Galan Produces First Round Surprise

Colombian number one Galan is playing in his first tournament since the Tokyo Olympics where he got to the second round before losing to the eventual gold medallist Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Better known as a clay court player, he pulled off a minor surprise in the first round by beating local man, Tommy Paul, the world number 55, in straight sets.

He began strongly, breaking Paul in the opening game of the match, and consolidated that break to take the first set. Offering Paul no break-back opportunities.

He then Put Paul under pressure on his own serve at the start of the second set, and, although the American was able to hold that time, two games later he was broken again.

The Colombian controlled the rest of the match, but, just for good measure, he underlined his dominance with another break.

Opelka v Galan Prediction and Tip

Although Galan produced a surprise to beat one American, the odds are against him repeating the trick with Opelka, who should be right at home in the conditions.
