Lloyd Harris v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between Harris, who is 24, and Sandgren, who is six years older.

Harris has overtaken Kevin Anderson to become South African number one, and although his rise to that top spot is partly due to Anderson’s long injury problems, it is also a reflection of the standard of play of the 24-year old.

Earlier this year he reached his second senior ATP final, although like his first in Adelaide last year, it ended in defeat. He was runner-up to Aslan Karatsev in Dubai. In that tournament he beat Dominic Thiem, his biggest win to date over a top ten player.

Since that performance in Dubai, success has been harder to come by for the South African, and the only time he has been beyond the second stage of any event was in Halle where he got to the quarter-finals before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Last week in Atlanta he lost in the first round to Jordan Thompson of Australia in three sets.

Sandgren Enjoys Morale-Boosting Win

Twice an Australian Open quarter-finalist, Sandgren had been enduring a difficult year on tour so far, epitomised by the Olympics, where, called into the squad when higher ranked players chose to stay at home, he promptly lost in the first round to the eventual bronze medallist Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain.

It was, therefore, important for his own morale, that he got back on the winning trail again, and he did so with a fighting victory over the Australian James Duckworth, the world number 80.

Sandgren began confidently, securing an early service break and then following it up with a second to claim the first set.

However, then he in turn dropped his serve early in the second set and Duckworth, in a reverse mirror image of the first set, secured a second break to level the match.

Sandgren had break points against him in the opening game of the third set, saved them both, and then broke Duckworth next game.

The Australian had the chance to break back next game, could not take it, and that was the last chance he got. Serving to stay in the match, Duckworth was broken once more and Sandgren had enjoyed, in the end, a relatively comfortable victory.

Harris v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

Harris will start the clear favourite for this match against an opponent, who, regardless of his first-round victory, has been struggling for recent form.
