Taylor Fritz v Denis Kudla Head to Head

The pair have played each other once three times before, twice on the Challenger circuit and once on the main tour. Fritz won their semi-final in a Challenger event in Dallas in 2017, but, at the same event a year later, Kudla got his revenge,

Kudla also won their match in 2019 at the Brisbane Open.

Atlanta Semi-Finalist Fritz

Last week Fritz reached the semi-finals in Atlanta before losing to the eventual winner John Isner, the closest he has come to win a tournament since finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Mexican Open last year before lockdown.

And it means that hs win in Eastbourne in June 2019 remains his only senior tour victory.

Fritz could have gone to the Olympics but chose to stay at home, in part because there were no ranking points on offer in Tokyo.

His best result came in Doha in March, when he also reached the semi-final stage before losing to the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Apart from that, Fritz, who had a first round bye in Washington, had a string of third round appearances to his name this year, most recently at Wimbledon and Los Cabos.

Kudla Beats Spanish Veteran

Kudla, who has not been in his best form recently, had a tough opening match in Washington against the Spanish veteran, Feliciano Lopez, who, at 39, is one of the oldest men on tour.

He began well, though ,breaking Lopez in his opening service game, and then holding next game despite the Spaniard having break back opportunities. And the set was secured after a marathon tenth game in which Lopez saved five set points, but could not prevent Kudla converting the sixth.

Both men created break points in the second set but neither could take them and it went to a tie-break. Kudla proved the more fallible of the pair on serve and Lopez was able to level the match.

The third set remained on serve until Lopez was broken in the seventh game. That proved to be the turning point as Kudla served out from there.

Fritz v Kudla Prediction and Tip

Although Kudla has the better head-to-head record, Fritz is the higher ranked of the pair and should be confident after his run in Atlanta last week. That should make him the favourite to reach the third round.
