Nadal Survives Sock Test

Playing for the first time since his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the French Open semifinal, Nadal’s comeback wasn’t convincing yet he survived a thrilling three-setter against American Jack Sock.

The top seed, who missed almost two months of action with a left-foot injury, needed three hours and five minutes to edge past the former No. 8, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1).

Sock, who is climbing back the rankings after struggles with injuries had pushed him out of the top 200, got a break early in the third, forcing the 20-time Grand Slam winner to fight his way back into the contest. Both players had 41 winners each, but Nadal made just 17 unforced errors to Sock’s 33.

Playing in front of a packed house, Sock had 10 break point opportunities with Nadal saving eight of them. The Spaniard himself had six breaking chances and he capitalised on three of those occasions on his way to improving 6-0 head to head against Sock.

Making his debut in Washington, Nadal now braces for another tough test against Harris.

Harris Advances After Sandgren Pulls Out

While Nadal slogged, Lloyd Harris didn’t have to play a complete match. The 14th seed South African moved into the third round after Tennys Sandgren retired while trailing 4-6, 0-1 in the second round.

The first set was a real tussle with Harris getting the only break in the ninth game. The South African broke Sandgren early in the second, before the American retired with a rib injury.

Ranked 50th in the world, Harris, hasn’t quite been at his best since his finishing runner-up in Dubai earlier this year. But it’s the hard courts that suit him more, and he will be looking to make the most of the North American swing. However, surviving the third round poses a massive challenge for the the 24-year-old.

Nadal v Harris Prediction and Tip

Harris isn’t in best of forms and although he will be the fresher of the two, Nadal remains an overwhelming favourite. The Spaniard to win in straight sets.
