Egypt’s Mayar Sherif got her first completed top 100 win as she stunned top seed Alize Cornet with a powerful performance in the first round.
Both lost their first service games in the match, but it was Sherif who took control of the contest from there on. Mixing power with precision, the Egyptian broke Cornet two more times in teh set and then continued her dominance in the second to score a 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 26 minutes.
A dangerous clay court player, Sherif has won six of her nine ITF titles on the surface and is now aiming to make a mark at the top level.
The Egyptian made history last year by becoming the first woman from her country to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam, when she made it to the French Open. This year, she went a step ahead winning her first round match at the Australian Open.
Sherif was also impressive at the WTA 125 in Bastad, reaching the quarterfinals.

Eala Impressive on Debut
Playing her maiden WTA 250 tournament, Philippines’ Alexandra Eala got off to a great start as she knocked out Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea 7-5, 6-2, in the first round.
The 16-year-old broke her opponent four times each in the two sets to win the contest in an hour and 35 minutes. Ormaechea too had eight break points in the contest, but Eala saved three of them.
Eala won her maiden ITF title in Manacor, Spain earlier this year, having reached the final for the first time.
Ranked 639th in the world, the Philippines player punched much above her weight in the first round, taking out the 209th ranked player and now she will looking to make her debut even sweeter with another win that could take her to the quarterfinals.
