Ilya Ivashka v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, with both matches taking place on clay earlier this year. Ivashka won in the qualifying competition for Geneva, and again in the second round in Munich.

Ivashka Knocks Out Dimitrov

Ivashka came to Washington in good form.

Last month he reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, by far his best ever showing in a Grand Slam and then performed well for his country at the Olympics, reaching the third round and causing an upset by knocking out Gael Monfils along the way.

He faced a man he knows well, compatriot Egor Gerasimov in the first round, and duly beat the world number 78 in straight sets.

That earned him a second round match against Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, the number four seed, and Ivashka rose to the occasion to record one of the best wins of his career.

Ivashka took control of the first set early, breaking Dimitrov in the third game, and then consolidating that position with a further break.

And, when he broke Dimitrov again early in the second set, it looked like victory was already in his grasp.

Ivashka served for the match and held a match point, but Dimitrov saved that and then fought back to level the match, forcing a tie-break.

Ivashka though forced a mini-break and held on to it, clinching the win with hs second match point.

McDonald Makes Good Progress in Washington

McDonald had lost his last three matches prior to Washington, but he seems to have found some form in the American capital, beginning with his straight sets defeat of Nick Kyrgios in the first round, a loss that made the Australian begin to drop hints he is considering retiring from the sport.

That earned McDonald a second round match against another mercurial character, Benoît Paire of France, the number 13 seed.

The first set went with serve until Paire was the first to be broken. However, he hit back to level straight away, and it ultimately meant a tie-break.

Paire went two mini-breaks up, McDonald recovered them both, but then gave Paire a set point opportunity which he duly took.

However, the Frenchman was then on the back foot after dropping his opening service game of the second set. He was briefly on level terns again, but McDonald restored his advantage and took the match into a third set.

Again, Paire was broken in the opening game of the third set, and, yet again he was able to level the match. However, McDonald broke him once more, and this time it proved to be decisive. Paire save three match points, but McDonald made the fourth count.

Ivashka v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Ivashka will start the clear favourite for this match. Both had good wins in their second round matches, but Ivashka is in good form recently and has won both of their matches this year, although they were clay court events.
