Elise Mertens v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The tally stands at 1-1 at the moment with Mertens getting the last laugh in 2020 WTA Doha.

Mertens Survives Mladenovic Attack

Starting as the top seed in San Jose, Elise Mertens of Belgian enjoyed a bye into the second round. There, she met the Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic and defeated her 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinal.

In a year where she has made terrific strides as singles and doubles player, Mertens will now look to better her previous results in the American swing. So far in 2021, she won the women’s doubles in the Australian Open, Istanbul Cup, and Wimbledon, along with winning the singles title in the Gippsland Trophy.

On the singles circuit, Mertens was the runner-up in Istanbul and also made it to the penultimate rounds in WTA Dubai, Miami Open, and Madrid Open. While her last tournament was the Olympics (where she lost in the opener to Ekaterina Alexandrova), it seems that the 25-year-old has done well to move past that rut.

Putintseva Continues to Deliver

Putintseva’s recent results on the tour have been considerably better than the one she had at the start of the season. A singles title in the Hungarian Grand Prix in July (her first such title since 2019) has given her the confidence to excel further on the WTA Tour.

Keeping aside the early-round Olympics exit where she retired in her opening match, the Kazakh has done well so far in the Silicon Valley Classic. In the first round, the number eight seed defeated Donna Vekic in straight sets and moved on to beat Ajla Tomljanovic next 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The 2020 US Open quarterfinalist had also made it to the quarterfinal in the Volvo Car Open and the third round in the Australian Open. At the same time, Putintseva has also been beaten in the opening rounds in the French Open, WTA Eastbourne, Wimbledon, Hamburg Open, among a few other tournaments.

Mertens v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Mertens will start as the favourite but it may not be a smooth journey for her. Expect a good game of tennis where Putintseva has the ability to deliver the upset and reach the semifinal.
