Sinner Stops the Brooksby Run In Straight Sets

The promising Jannik Sinner from Italy, aged only 19 lost his way this season somewhat after losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the Maimi Open final after a good run at the tournament.

The clay run was underwhelming except for a semi-final showing in Barcelona defeating Andrey Rublev en route to a loss against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final four. Running into Novak Djokovic once and Rafael Nadal twice on clay also did not help Sinner’s cause.

The grass swing did not go particularly well either with first round losses at Queens Club and Wimbledon and when the Italian started the US Open Series, it was an opening match loss as the second seed against Chris O’Connell in Atlanta last week.

It has been a welcome return to form this week for Sinner here in the US Capital for Sinner with straight set wins all along thus far and some crucial wins against Sebastian Korda and Steve Johnson heading into the final four against Jason Brooksby, fellow Next Gen on a strong run himself.

The first set in the Next Gen clash was well fought with Sinner prevailing in a tie-break but then the Italian ran away 6-1 in the second for another straight sets win this week and a spot in the final for his first ever ATP 500 title.

First ATP Final For McDonald

American Mackenzie McDonald prefers playing on hard courts, and a run to the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year was a testament to that.

The American had a none too impressive run on the other surfaces as well, reaching the second round of the French Open as a qualifier and and also making the main draw at Wimbledon, after winning all three qualifiers, but fell in the opener.

It was not the best couple of weeks since Wimbledon for the American with opening round losses at Cabos and Atlanta in the last fortnight and he came to Washington DC hoping that he can course correct prior to the US Open at the end of the month.

The week started well for the American as he defeated defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the opener and then followed it with impressive wins against Benoit Paire, Ilya Ivashka and Denis Kudla.

A challenging semi-final against the in-form Kei Nishikori followed and when the match was tied at a set apiece, it looked like the more experienced Japanese would prevail, but the American held on well for 5-5 in the decider.

With Nishikori serving to stay in the match at 5-6, McDonald played an aggressive game on the return, putting the former Citi Open winner under pressure and breaking him at 30-40 to make his first ever ATP final.

Sinner v McDonald Prediction and Tip

An unexpected yet exciting final on the cards at the Citi Open, as the US hard court season picks up here on. Expect a good match between both players gunning for a huge confidence booster of a title and it will be down to the better play on the Sunday.

Sinner has yet to drop a set and tasted more success than the debutante finalist. Expect a three-setter with Sinner taking the title.
