Victoria Azarenka v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

Back in 2008-2009, they met thrice and Azarenka won all three of those matches convincingly. This year, they met at Wimbledon for the first time after 12 years, and the Romanian scored her first win over Azarenka, winning the second round contest in three sets.

Azarenka Returns to Action

It’s been over a month that Azarenka hasn’t played a competitive match. The last time she took the court, she was knocked out of the second round of Wimbledon. Now she returns to action on Tuesday against the same opponent who stopped her run at the Championships.

There will be a bit of pressure on the eighth seed as Cirstea has been resurgent this season and she also got a good win in the first round. Azarenka, who received a first-round bye, might be a bit rusty and may need to bring out her A-game to begin her Canadian Open campaign.

A former No. 1, Azarenka has a decent 15-5 record this season, but is yet to feature in a final. The 21-time champion and 19-time runner-up won the Western and Southern Open last year and finished runner-up for the third time at the U.S. Open and also reached the final in Ostrava.

This year, Azarenka made it to the semifinal in Qatar but had to pull out before her final four contest. Her only other semifinal appearance was in Berlin where she was stunned by Liudmila Samsonova.

The vastly experienced Belarusian, who thrives on all surfaces, has an exceptional 74% win record on hard courts and 20 of her 21 titles have been won on the surface. She is yet to reach a final in Montreal though, having lost three semifinals previously.

Cirstea Knocks Out Riske

The 2013 Canadian Open runner-up continued her impressive run in 2021, by making a winning start in Montreal. Cirstea defeated the United States’ Alison Riske 6-3, 6-4 in the first round on Monday.

The Romanian went 2-0 up in the first set, but saw her advantage vanish when Riske broke back in the fifth game. Cirstea broke back immediately to restore her lead and then clung on to it to take the first set. She got the only break of the second set early and held on to the lead to clinch the contest in an hour and 34 minutes.

Ranked 40th in the world, the 31-year-old has been in terrific form this season. She won her first WTA title in over 13 years, when she won the final in Istanbul and finished runner-up in Strasbourg.

Azarenka v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

At Wimbledon, Cirstea won 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Expect this one to be a hard-fought battle as well, with the match going the distance.
