Dimitrov Coming off Shock Washington Loss

Getting a first round bye at Washington Open, Dimitrov stumbled on the very first hurdle there when he fell in straight sets to Ilya Ivashka in round two.

Dimitrov, who lost 6-2, 7-6 (4) in that opener, will now get another chance to improve himself at the US Open Series, having earlier shown good signs in hard court tournaments this season.

It included a quarterfinal appearance at Murray River Open and another quarterfinal at Australian Open before settling in for a last-eight stage showing in Acapulco.

What’s interesting to note is Dimitrov’s record on hard court surfaces where he has won six of his eight titles, has deteriorated over the last few years. Since the start of the 2018 season he has been on a 41-32 win-loss record on it, spread across all kinds of tournaments and for the former world number three, he would love to do a lot better than that.

Opelka Arrests Poor Showing with Kyrgios Win

Having won just four matches of the 11 he had played on hard court surfaces this season, Opelka had gone into his opening round match against Nick Kyrgios here as a second favourite as one would imagine.

And down a set and 4-4 in the second set tie-breaker, the American was staring at a possible defeat.

That Kyrgios imploded to an extent helped his cause but due credit to the manner in which Opelka kept his calm and carved out a three-set win in a match lasting two hours. He won 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 with an early break in the final set sealing the deal for him.

Having never played in this tournament before this, Opelka has already won a match now with Dimitrov showing signs of inconsistency, he will give himself a chance now of making it to the third round too.

Dimitrov v Opelka Prediction and Tip

This could well be one of the more intriguing contests of round two and one that is decided in the final set where the Bulgarian edges out Opelka.
