Jannik Sinner v James Duckworth Head to Head

Jannik Sinner and James Duckworth have featured in just one, career head-to-head meeting till date. They faced each other in the third round of the indoor, hard court event in Cologne, Germany last year. Sinner routed Duckworth in straight sets.

What’s more, he didn’t drop a single set on the road to the final, which went to show the extent of his dominance over his rivals in the tournament.

Coming into the event on the back of a last-16 defeat to Australian Christopher O’Connell in Atlanta, Sinner opened his Washington campaign with an emphatic win over Finn Emil Ruusuvuori and followed up with a labored victory over rising American Sebastian Korda.

Running into Steve Johnson of the US in the quarter-final, the Italian breezed to a win in straight sets to set up a last-four battle with fast emerging American Jenson Brooksby.

After facing stiff resistance in the opening set, which went to a tiebreaker, the Italian teen cruised the American in the second to book his passage to the final.

Sinner took the opening set in the championship showdown before McDonald drew level by winning the second. The deciding set saw end-to-end battle but the Italian prevailed in the end to lift his third career title.

Though Sinner has to navigate a tough men’s draw to go deep in Toronto, he will open his campaign with what should be a relatively easier outing against Duckworth.

Duckworth Upsets Fritz in Toronto Opener

Taking the confidence from an impressive third-round finish at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Duckworth slipped in Washington, which marked his return to the men’s Tour.

The 29-year-old Australian fell to a three-set defeat to seasoned American Tennys Sandgren in his opening-round fixture in the US capital.

Having to clear the qualifiers to ensure passage to the main draw at the Canadian Open, Duckworth beat Illya Marchenko of Ukraine and Peter Polansky of Canada to cross the qualifying hurdles.

Opening his campaign against current World No. 40 Taylor Fritz, Duckworth stunned the American in straight sets to set up a third-round clash Sinner.

Though Sinner prevailed in his only previous head-to-head meeting against Duckworth, the Australian, through his upset of Fritz, showed he has the game to take down the top stars.
