Hubert Hurkacz v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head

Hurkacz Benefits from Nishikori Injury

After getting a first round bye, Hurkacz was scheduled to take on Japan’s in-form Kei Nishikori in his second round encounter but he did not have to even take to court.

This was after Nishikori withdrew from that match because of a shoulder injury, leaving Hurkacz to reap benefits of making the third round in Canada without having to lift his racquet.

Hurkacz has had a solid ATP season so far, having won 19 of their 27 matches played in 2021. This includes a run to the semifinal at Wimbledon more recently and a Masters title win in Miami on hard court.

That makes him as one of the dark horses in this tournament, especially now that the Big Three have all withdrawn from Toronto and the draw doesn’t look as menacing as it might have. Can Hurkacz now overcome his rustiness and get past Basilashvili to set up a potential quarterfinal against Daniil Medvedev?

Basilashvili Shocker for De Minaur

He has gone into his first two rounds as an underdog and both times, Basilashvili has stunned his opponent to storm into the next match.

The Georgian player who had a woeful start to the season, but has already won two ATP titles this year, first overcame a set deficit against the talented American Jenson Brooksby to win his opener.

And then going into his second round encounter at 6/4 odds against Alex De Minaur, he gave his Australian opponent no chance to come through. De Minaur was a pale shadow of his own self, sure, but for Basilashvili to come through 6-1, 6-1 in a mere 57 minutes would have given him a huge boost coming into his third round encounter.

What would be interesting to see is if Basilashvili, who can at times fluctuate between extremes with his form, can take this confidence against an opponent as strong as Hurkacz but one who has barely played in a while.

Hurkacz v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

On paper, Basilashvili is an underdog yet again but he could put up a strong showing against his Polish opponent (Hurkacz is 8/13 to win this). Expect a contest that goes the distance.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
