Gael Monfils v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
Veteran Frenchman Monfils has been involved in just one career, head-to-head meeting with his American rival Frances Tiafoe. They went against each other in the second round of the 2019 ATP Masters 1000 at Cincinnati, with Tiafoe prevailing in straight sets.

Monfils Needs a Change in Fortunes
Monfils hasn’t had the most fruitful of runs across events and surfaces this season. The Frenchman opened his season with a crushing first-round exit at the Australian Open and couldn’t really take any forward strides thereafter.
Struggling with fitness and form, the 34-year-old labored to get to the other end of what seemed a prolonged career slump.
Currently ranked 22nd in singles, Monfils’ best run this season were last-16 finishes at Lyon, Belgrade-2 and Eastbourne, the last of which was a grass court tune-up event ahead of the Wimbledon Championships.
Coming into All England with doubts swirling around his game, the Frenchman opened his campaign with a labored win over Christopher O’Connell of Australia.
However, he slipped royally on the lawns against Pedro Martinez of Spain in his second-round fixture, going down in four sets to crash out of the tournament.
He had also fared dismally at Roland-Garros, his home Grand Slam, as he was sent packing in the second round by Swede Mikael Ymer.
In desperate need to regain the form that once took him to No.6 in singles, Monfils opened his Toronto campaign with a three-set victory over Australian journeyman John Millman.
It was his first appearance on the hard court since the Australian Open and, by the looks of it, he did well to adapt himself to the surface and come away a winner.
However, he faces tougher challenges in his quest to go deeper in the tournament and his first real test will be a last-16 outing against Tiafoe.

Tiafoe Stuns Shapovalov
After a decent third-round finish at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, which saw him pick up one of his biggest career scalps in the form of current World No.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening round, Tiafoe suffered a setback of sorts in Washington.
Facing the unheralded but hugely promising Jenson Brooksby in his opening round, Tiafoe fought hard but couldn’t get over the line against his compatriot.
Licking his wounds from the US capital, the 52nd-ranked American cleared the qualifiers to make the main draw in Toronto.
After coasting past Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in his opening-round fixture, Tiafoe produced a stunning upset of this year’s Wimbledon semifinalist and home favorite Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to set up an intriguing third-round battle with Monfils.
Monfils v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip
Monfils has experience on his side, but form and recent run of results put Tiafoe at a clear advantage over the Frenchman in this last-16 tie. However, don’t rule out a Monfils special in the Canadian capital.
