David Goffin v Guido Pella Head to Head
These two players have met five times before, with Goffin leading the head-to-head 4-1. They met in Cincinnati two years ago with the Belgian winning 6-1 7-5.

2021 has not been Goffin’s best season, and he currently sits and 19th in the ATP rankings.
In his opening round in Cincinnati, he aims to end a 4-match losing streak, with his last tour win dating back to the 9th of May, where he beat Italian Caruso 6-4 6-1 in Rome.
Since then, Goffin has suffered defeats to Delbonis, Bedene, Musetti and Moutet, where he had to retire at one-set-all in Halle. This kickstarted two months away from the tour due to injury.
The Belgian has failed to win back-to-back matches since April, where he made the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo, eventually losing out to Britain’s Dan Evans 6-4 in the third set.
During his Monte Carlo run Goffin played some of his best tennis, recording an opening-round victory against Cilic and a straight-sets 6-4 7-6(7) win over Zverev.
The 30-year-old has also lifted silverware this year in Montpellier, beating Spain’s Bautista Agut in the final 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Nonetheless, it has definitely been an inconsistent year for Goffin; however, he can take confidence from the 4-1 head-to-head he has with Pella, and the fact he beat him in Cincinnati two years ago.

Pella Desperate to Find His Best Form
Currently ranked 93rd, Pella is not having the best season, and has only recorded 3 wins on the ATP tour this year, and is currently on a 5-match losing streak, with his last win dating back to the 30th of May at the French Open where he beat Galan Riveros in straight sets.
Throughout 2021, Pella has made it past the first round just twice, and hasn’t secured back-to-back wins all year, so he is desperate to find form on the American hard courts this week.
The Argentine does know what it takes to beat Goffin; in 2019 he successfully beat David 6-4 7-6(4) in Montreal; however, this is his only win against Belgian and on 4 other occasions he has shook Goffin’s hand as the loser.
Therefore, the 31 -year-old is going to have to find his best tennis if he hopes to advance to the next round in Cincinnati.

Goffin, despite his inconsistencies, will be a favourite to make it through but we can expect a three-setter here that will take him through.
