Sebastian Korda v Laslo Djere Head to Head

Sebastian Korda and Laslo Djere have never played each other before. However, they would have sat down with their respective teams, poring over footage of each other in action and devising their plans for their first-ever head-to-head clash in Cincinnati.

Korda Coming off Sinner Loss in Washington

Taking the momentum from this year’s Wimbledon Championships where he made the last 16, taking down the likes of British No.1 Dan Evans and World No.18 Alex De Minaur, Korda launched his campaign at the Washington Open with a comfortable win over veteran Canadian star Vasek Pospisil.

However, he failed to clear the last-16 hurdle against fellow tennis sensation and eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

In a match that went down to the wire and had the spectators on the edge of their seats for the better part of it, Korda was on level with Sinner in the contest, with the opening set going to a tiebreak.

However, the 19-year-old pipped the American 7-3 in the tiebreak to go a set up. The second set panned out on similar lines, with the score-line reading 6-6 at the end of the regulation 12 games.

In the consequent tiebreak, Sinner edged Korda again by the same margin to close out a nervy, straight-set win.

He opens his Cincinnati campaign against Laslo Djere, a Serbian rival he has never battled on court but would have seen enough of in the circuit.

For someone who has made some big strides but is still finding his feet on the men’s Tour, Korda will eye a good run, possibly in a title-winning cause, at Cincinnati and put himself in amongst the dark horses at the US Open.

Djere Went Down in Kitzbuhel Opener

Currently ranked 51st in singles, Djere’s last tournament ended in despair and disappointment as he lost in the opening round at the Austrian Open to emerging German Daniel Altmaier.

The 26-year-old Serbian seemed to be on course for a comfortable win, having taken the opening set at a canter.

However, the German had other ideas as he staged a valiant fightback to go level with the Serbian at a set apiece. In the deciding set, Altmaier got himself a decisive break and held on it to close out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.

Though he slipped on clay in Austria, he came to Kitzbuhel on the back of two straight semifinal finishes at the Swiss Open and German Open.

Cincinnati would mark the Serbian’s first event on clay since his opening-round exit in Austria and he would be keen to start on a winning note against Korda and go deep.

Korda v Djere Prediction and Tip

Neither player would hold an edge over the other in this opening-round encounter as both failed to meet their desired goals in their last tournaments.

However, the fact that the American will be playing before the home crowd, would put him at a slight advantage over the Serbian.
