Andy Murray v Richard Gasquet Head to Head
This is a long-standing rivalry that began at the 2006 Toronto Masters and saw their 12th match played in Cincinnati in 2019. And while Murray leads 8-4 on head to head, it was Gasquet who won their last match in straight sets.

Injuries have become the central storyline for Murray in recent times as he has struggled through court time even this season having played a mere 13 matches. And they have also been staggered.
After missing the Australian Open, Murray finally opened his campaign for this season in Biella at a Challenger competition and after a string of lacklustre finishes in three ATP tournaments, he finally came into his own at Wimbledon.
Wins over Nikoloz Basilashvili and Oscar Otte for the former Wimbledon winner took him to the third round there where he finally went down in straight sets to Denis Shapovalov.
And while that defeat would hurt Murray given its nature – a straight-set rout in which the Brit was never in the contest – he returns to the US Open Series to kick-start his resurrection. He has a familiar opponent up against him and one whom he has beaten in the past.

Gasquet Returns to Hard Courts after Poor Start
While Gasquet has had a decent season overall, especially given his own ranking of outside the top 50, his start to the year hadn’t been the best. And more importantly that had come in hard court tournaments.
It started with a first round exit at the Murray River Open and was followed a withdrawal from Australian Open. A foot injury struck him before his second round match in Doha and he was then sent packing in the second round in Dubai to end his hard court run.
And coming into this tournament as a qualifier, while he defeated Jaume Munar and Fernando Verdasco to get into the main draw he would know those are clay-court players.
Gasquet now faces someone who has done well on hard court surfaces even in recent times when injuries dominated the headlines for Murray. Can he topple the Brit in the manner he had the last time they met in Cincinnati?

Murray is making a return after having been out of action since Wimbledon and that is why it might not be the easiest call to have him as a favourite. We could have an up and down contest that gets decided in the third.
