Fabio Fognini v Guido Pella Head to Head
The pair have played each other five times before, and Fognini leads their head-to-head series by three matches to two. All but one of those previous matches have been on clay. Pella winning in Sao Paolo in 2015 and again in Munich two years later. Meanwhile, Fognini won in their Davis Cup tie in 2017 and in Geneva earlier this year.
Their one previous meeting on a hard court was at the Australian Open last year, Fognini winning in straight sets.

Fognini Encouraged by Basilashvili Victory
Fognini did not come into the week in the best of form, after a disappointing sequence of results which had seen him drop out of the world’s top 20.
However, he was able to overcome that with an encouraging first round win over Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, the world number 40.
The Italian began strongly, breaking his opponent in the opening game of the match, and seemed in control until dropping his own serve. He immediately got the break back but then surrendered his serve once more, meaning that a tie-break was needed to separate them.
The pair swapped mini-breaks at the start, but two more points against the Basilashvili serve were enough to tilt things the Italian’s way.
Again, Fognini had the benefit of an early break in the second set, but, yet again he could not hang on to it and the Georgian was able to level.
This time though, when Fognini forced a second break, he made it count by serving out for the match.

Pella Wins For the First Time Since French Open
Pella, like most South American players, is more adept on a clay court than a hard surface, and he came into this tournament not having picked up a racquet in anger since suffering a first round defeat to Matteo Barrettini at Wimbledon.
Indeed, he had not won a single match in tour since reaching the second round of the French Open in early June.
However, he belied that form with a convincing straight sets victory on Monday in the first round over the number 15 seed and world number 19, David Goffin, of Belgium.
The match began with serve dominating, but then in the seventh game, Pella created a break chance and converted it to seize the initiative, consolidating it with a second break to take the first set.
Goffin then looked like he was ready to mount a fightback when he broke Pella at the start of the second set, but it proved to be a false dawn for the Belgian. He was under constant pressure on his own serve, and soon was broken as Pella squared things up.
And Pella then forced another break giving him the opportunity to serve for the match. He needed no second invitation.
Fognini v Pella Prediction and Tip
Both will have taken encouragement from their first round wins, but. on a hard court, Fognini would appear to have the clear edge over the Argentine.
