Hubert Hurkacz struck 15 aces on his way to a 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday.
Breaking the Spaniard twice, the Pole won the first five games of the match and then held on to close out the first set. He also got an early break in the second, but Davidovich Fokina came back with a break of serve and then dominated the tiebreak to force the decider.
In the third, Hurkacz took charge once again, breaking the World No. 34 twice to seal the contest in two hours and nine minutes. Hurkacz won 73% first serve points and saved three of four break points in the match, which converting five of 10.
The World No. 13, who lost in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open to Daniil Medvedev last week, improved his season record to 23-14 on Tuesday.
In what’s been a stellar year, the Miami Open and Delray Beach champion had beaten Medvedev and Roger Federer en route his maiden Wimbledon semifinal, thanks to which he peaked to a career-high ranking of 11 in July.

Murray Knocks Out Gasquet in Opener
He is a two-time champion in Cincy and played like champion in the opener against qualifier Richard Gasquet.
Murray struck 14 aces and a total of 38 winners to send the World No. 53 packing 6-4, 6-4.
The former World No. 1 had 10 break point chances in the match, and he capitalised on three of them, twice in the first and once in the second set. Gasquet too had five chances to break the Briton’s serve, but Murray saved four of them while getting broken once in the first set.
A 46-time champion on the tour, Murray won the Cincinnati titles in 2008 and 2011 and finished runner-up in 2016.
Playing in the first tournament since his Wimbledon third round defeat to Denis Shapovalov, the world no. 105 improved his season record to 5-4.
Hurkacz v Murray Prediction and Tip
Murray felt good about his win over Gasquet and will be aiming for more success in the tournament, but Hurkacz’s form gives him the edge. Expect the Pole to advance.
