Andrey Rublev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

Rublev leads 3-1 head to head. Cilic won in 2015, but Rublev’s dominated the recent contests, winning twice in 2019 in Miami and Moscow, and once this year, in the Round of 16 in Miami.

Rublev Has One Win from Last Two Tournaments

Knocked out in the first round in Tokyo by Kei Nishikori and in his second match in Toronto by John Isner last week, Rublev hasn’t been able to transition well from grass to hard court, but given the class of the Russian, it’s only a matter of time when he is back to his dominant self.

Playing for the fourth time in Cincinnati, Rublev has happy memories from the 2019 event when he stunned Roger Federer on his way to the quarterfinals.

Currently at a career-high ranking of No. 7, the Russian is enjoying another great season, which is reflected in his 37-13 season record.

A five-time winner on the tour last year, he has won just one this year, in Rotterdam, but also has two runner-up finishes in Monte-Carlo and Halle and three semifinal finishes in Doha, Dubai and Miami to go along the team title at the ATP Cup.

To top it all he also won a gold at the Olympics in the mixed doubles event with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

But, one win from his last two tournaments will be a bit concerning for the 23-year-old, who will look to start well against Cilic on Wednesday.

Cilic Eliminates Karatsev

The 2016 champion got his campaign off to a great start, easing past Russia’s Aslan Karatsev in the first round.

The World no. 39 took the contest 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 52 minutes to extend Karatsev’s poor run of recent form. Winning 84% points on the back of his first serve, Cilic faced just one break point in the entire match, which was converted by Karatsev. The Croatian himself had nine opportunities to break the Russian’s serve and he took three of them to advance.

The former World no. 3 who won the Stuttgart title for his first triumph since 2018, improved his season record to 22-14 and his Cincinnati record to 17-10. In 2016, Cilic had beaten Andy Murray in the final and was also a semifinalist in 2018.

Rublev v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Rublev has dominated this rivalry recently and he is expected to extend his lead over Cilic. But has current form has been a bit dodgy. Expect a close contest with Rublev advancing.
