Alex de Minaur v Gael Monfils Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 22-year old Australian, and his French opponent, who is 12 years older.

De Minaur has already won two titles in 2021 in Antalya and Eastbourne, and has happy memories of this event, having won the doubles title last year with Pablo Carreno-Busta.
Like Monfils he faced Serbian opposition in the first round in the form of world number 33, Filip Krajinovic.
De Minaur made a terrible start to the match, dropping his opening service game and then suffering the embarrassment of losing the first set without winning a single game.
He then had to save a break point early in the second set, before slowly working his way back into the match.
Krajinovic offered him up a break point, which he converted and the tide began to turn. De Minaur served out from there, and began to take control.
When he broke the Serb early in the third set the comeback seemed complete, only for Krajinovic to break back straightway.
However, de Minaur broke him again in turn, and this time he offered no second chances. Krajinovic won only one more point against the Australian serve in the match as de Minaur made sure of his progression to face Monfils.

Monfils Battles Through to Second Round
Monfils has endured a long and dismal run in 2021, that has seen him tumble out of the top ten berth he occupied at the start of 2021.
However, there are signs that he may be finding some long overdue form at last, having reached the third round in Toronto last week, and opened his campaign in Cincinnati in with a good win against Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, the world number 44, a replacement for Stan Wawrinka in the main draw.
The first set though was very scrappy full of unforced errors from both men, with Monfils guilty of dropping his opening service game of the match.
He fought back to level, only to drop his serve once more, and Lajovic held twos et points. Monfils though saved them both and engineered a break of his own. However, immediately Monfils dropped his serve again, giving Lajovic the chance yet again to serve for the set.
Yet again, he could not take it and a tie-break was required, which Monfils dominated to take the set.
It was Lajovic’s turn to drop his serve early at the start of the second set, and Monfils consolidated that with a double break. The Serb halved the deficit, but Monfils immediately restored hs lead and served out, earning the win on his second match point.
De Minaur v Monfils Prediction and Tip
Both men defeated Serbian opposition in the first round, although not without difficulties, and will be looking for an improved level of performance in this match. Based on form in 2021 alone, de Minaur will begin as the favourite, but it might be a close match.
