Benoît Paire  v John Isner Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and their head-to-head record is one win apiece.  Isner won indoors in Montpellier in 2010, but Paire won outdoors in Washington two years ago. Both matches were straight set wins.

Paire Battling Through in Cincinnati

As ever, Paire has to contend with his own demons when he steps on a tennis court, but so far he has managed to control his fragile temperament in Cincinnati with two fighting performances this week.

He began against Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, the world number 58, who took the first set of their match, before Paire composed himself, and took the next two for the loss of just five games.

Then, on Wednesday, he faced the Wimbledon finalist, Denis Shapovalov of Canada, the number six seed.

Paire began strongly, breaking the world number 10 and then reinforcing that with another break to take the first set.

However, Shapovalov rallied, broke Paire in the opening game of the second set, and maintained that advantage to level the match.

And when Paire was broken in the opening game of the third set as well, things looked bleak for him. But he fought back with a break of his own, before the pair swapped breaks again.

The match was ultimately decided in the 11th and 12th games. Shapovalov had two break points against the Paire serve, but was unable to take them, meaning the Canadian had to serve to stay in the match.

He saved three match points but was powerless to stop Paire converting the fourth.

Isner’s Purple Form Continues

Isner has discovered a rich vein of form in the middle of the season.

It began in Atlanta, where he won the title for the sixth time, his first senior tournament victory for more than two years.

And then, in Toronto, he reached the semi-finals, beating Andrey Rublev along the way, before eventually losing to Daniil Medvedev.

And now he is again going well in Cincinnati, after two battling performances.

In the first round he came from a set down to beat Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, winner in Los Cabos,

And that earned her a match against another recent tournament winner, the Italian Jannik Sinner, who lifted the trophy aloft in Washington.

It was a match dominated by serve, with break opportunities few and far between.

In the tenth game of the firsts et, with the teenage Italian staying to save in the set, Isner had two break points, could convert neither of them and was made to pay when his own serve was broken next game. Sinner served out for the set.

The second set was dominated by serve so much that not a single break point was created on either side of the net. And, when Isner suffered the first mini-break against him in the tie-break, the writing looked on the wall for the American.

But he hit back, took three points against the Sinner serve, and was able to level the match.

Decisively, he then broke the teenager in the fifth game of the third set.  From there he was able to control the rest of the match.

Paire v Isner Prediction and Tip

Both men have had to dig deep to get to this stage, with two battling three set victories. However, Isner is in the middle of a purple patch of form right now, and is tipped to make the quarter-finals.
