The Olympic bronze medallist has struggled in the North American swing so far. At the Canadian Open, Johanna Konta fought back from a set down to beat the Ukrainian 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, while in Cincinnati last week, Angelique Kerber eliminated the 26-year-old with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
With the U.S. Open just a week away, the World No. 6 needs to get her winning touch back in Chicago. A semifinalist at Flushing Meadows in 2019, Svitolina hasn’t quite been at her best this season. She was a semifinalist at the Miami Open and also reached the final four in Stuttgart, but fell to Ashleigh Barty on both the occasions.
She has also had four quarterfinal finishes this season, but the 15-time WTA champion is yet to add to her 18 final appearances. Seeded No. 1 in Chicago, she has a good chance of making it to her first final of the season and fine-tune her game ahead of the final slam.

Burel Gets Lucky Loser Spot
World No. 91 Clara Burel is into the main draw as a lucky loser. The 20-year-old Frenchwoman defeated Chile’s Bárbara Gatica 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the first qualifying round but fell to Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi 6-2, 5-7, 2-6 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
Burel, who reached her maiden WTA final in Lausanne last month, had qualified for the main draw in Montreal, before going down to Ons Jabeur in straight sets. She also featured in Chicago Challenger last week, winning her first round match, but falling in the second round to Emma Raducanu.
Burel’s run in Lausanne included wins over Fiona Ferro and Caroline Garcia, but she was denied a maiden title by Tamara Zidansek in the final. Burel, who has a 30-13 record across levels this year, featured in three ITF finals, winning one in France in May and finishing runners-up in the other two.
