Dominik Koepfer v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head

In their only previous meeting which came on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this season, Cecchinato registered a straight-set win over Koepfer in the opening round.

Koepfer Showing Decent Signs on Hard Court

He is ranked 56th in the world, close to his career-best of 50th and in more recent times, Koepfer has shown signs of reasonable form.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Koepfer won a couple of rounds to make it to the third before losing to Pablo Carreno Busta. And while he fell in the qualifiers of the Rogers Cup, Koepfer retaliated by qualifying for the Cincinnati Masters as a lucky loser and beating Jan-Lennard Struff in the opener there.

Interestingly, he lost to Busta yet again in the second round.

With an opening round bye in this competition, Koepfer will hope he can turn things around against a player who had beaten him but on a surface where he does well typically.

Cecchinato Stuns Sandgren in Opener

A clay court specialist and then some, Cecchinato was a whopping 2/1 to get past Tennys Sandgren in the opening round and that’s exactly what he managed to do.

In what was his first win outside of clay for the season, the Italian player registered a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sandgren in an hour and 19 minutes to advance to the second round.

Coming off a semifinal appearance at a Challenger competition on clay, Cecchinato faced three break-points in the entire match and saved all of them, while breaking Sandgren two times – once apiece in each of the two sets.

It was Cecchinato’s whopping 92% of the first serve points won that helped him through, with his opponent finding it tough to get past the Italian.

Coming up against Koepfer, if Cecchinato can tune in the same way as he did in his opener, we could see an encounter lot closer than otherwise involving him outside of clay.

Koepfer v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Not too surprisingly, again, Cecchinato is 2/1 to win this as compared to 2/5 for a Koepfer win. Will the lightning strike twice? We doubt it and have Koepfer clinching this even if it means he might have to fight hard for it.
