Qualifier Bogdan Helped by Watson Injury

While Bogdan was helped by Heather Watson’s injury in her opening round match, it must be quickly added she was on the top of her game before her opponent’s retirement.

Bogdan was leading 6-2, 1-0 but 53 minutes into the contest Watson decided to call it quits, allowing her opponent to make it to the second round in her third tournament in a row.

Having earlier reached the third round at French Open after getting aided by the Naomi Osaka controversy and subsequent withdrawal, Bogdan had also made the second round in Budapest, Romanian Open and now here in Chicago.

She had earlier overcome Emma Navarro and Kimberly Zimmermann in the qualifiers to seal her place in the opener.

Can Bogdan now move past this second round match and try and break into the top 100 on the WTA charts?

Gracheva Stuns Zidansek

She had gone into her opening round match against Tamara Zidansek at 2/1 odds but Gracheva turned the screws on her opponents to register a three-set win.

Gracheva overcame a bad form tumble in the second set to win 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted an hour and 45 minutes.

Zidansek took the early lead by going 2-0 up but back to back breaks for Gracheva looked to have surprised her and before she could recover, the set was gone. The world number 39 then showed her mettle in the second by racing off to a 4-0 lead and sealing the equaliser soon after, giving an impression she had had the measure of her opponent.

Fortunately for Gracheva, a couple of easy holds to start off the decider was followed by a break of serve, and she then made it a second break as Zidansek served to stay in the match.

Can she now take down Bogdan in a similar fashion?

Bogdan v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

This sounds like an intriguing contest but Bogdan could hold the edge given her performance on hard court surfaces is better than her opponent’s. Backing her to win this.
