Alcaraz Hoping for Better Hard Court Form

It has been a breakout season for Alcaraz, one in which he has jumped up strongly on the ATP rankings and also won his maiden title on the tour.

However, most of the Spanish teenager’s success comes on clay, while he is yet to get going on hard court surfaces.

In fact it was as recently as the last week of July he won that title in Umag, but the follow-up hasn’t been the best for him. First he fell in the Kitzbuhel Open opener, and while he then qualified for the Cincinnati Masters main draw, Alcaraz lost in straight sets in his first round match against Lorenzo Sonego.

Coming into this one against Popyrin as a seeded player, Alcaraz will know he is some way away from replicating his clay successes but he would back himself slightly more here than he might have against Sonego last week.

Qualifier Popyrin Stuns Johnson

Popyrin had 2/1 odds associated with him coming into his opening round match against Steve Johnson but came through in straight sets to win just second main draw match since May of this season.

The Aussie, who had earlier defeated Sasi Mukund and Yosuke Watanuki in the qualifiers to make it to round one, completed a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the pre-match favourite Johnson.

In a match which lasted an hour and 38 minutes, Popyrin showed the kind of form which had been on display for him at the start of the season, to break his opponent three times in the encounter.

He faced one break-point himself and while he was broken in the first set as Johnson levelled things out at 4-4, Popyrin took control of the match from there on.

Can he do the same against the higher-ranked Alcaraz, who has had his issues on hard court surfaces?

Alcaraz v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

This could get to be a close encounter with a talented but clay court specialist one side and a player who likes hard courts but fighting for form. We could see a three-setter here.
