It’s been an interesting sort of a season for Fucsovics who has proved to be a dangerous player on occasions but in the same breath there have been other times when he has struggled to get going.
At Rotterdam, for instance, earlier in the year he made it through the qualifiers to enter the final before he fell to Andrey Rublev. He was also a quarterfinalist in Dubai and made third round at Australian Open.
But his best showing came at Wimbledon where he stunned Jannik Sinner, Diego Schwartzman and Andrey Rublev to enter the last eight stage before going down to Novak Djokovic.
At the other end of the spectrum have been performances like the one at Cincinnati last week where he was sent packing by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round. Or at Stuttgart where he lost to Ugo Humbert in his opener.
Or a few of his second round losses too.
So while he should not have too many issues against a lucky loser ranked outside the top 250, Fucsovics will hope to get going and ease into the next stage.

Watanuki Registers Rare Win
In a career that has been a few years old now, the 255th-ranked Watanuki hasn’t done too much of note before the start of this tournament.
In fact, he had tumbled out in the qualifiers in Winston-Salem, losing to Alexei Popyrin but a quirk of fate allowed him to make it to the main draw of the competition.
Watanuki entered his first round match against Jaume Munar at 5/2 odds, such a rank outsider he was and there was good reason for that too. Before this, Watanuki’s main draw record read an underwhelming two wins and three defeats – that’s the tennis he had played at the highest level, having had to fend for himself on the Challenger and Futures circuit.
Which is why a comeback from behind win over the 64th-ranked Munar, which included a final set bagel, would go no end in boosting the Japanese player’s confidence.
And while Fucsovics will prove to be a different kettle of fish, confidence can do wonders to performances.
