The top seed sailed into the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan. The Russian had 18 break points in the match but she could convert just seven of them. Her opponent too had seven break points and she converted four of them.

The one hour and 27 minutes contest saw the 24-year-old Russian get four breaks in the first and three in the second, while her opponent got two in both sets.

The world No. 27, who received a wild card for the tournament, won 73% first-serve points and a total of 59% return points in the match.

A former world No. 10, Kasatkina has had a brilliant year so far, winning the Phillip Island Trophy and the St. Petersburg title. She also had runner-up finishes in Birmingham and in San Jose earlier this month.

In her last two tournaments, Kasatkina reached the second round in Montreal before going down to Ons Jabeur, while in Cincinnati, she fell to Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round.

McNally Edges Past Danilina

The 19-year-old needed two hours and 25 minutes to beat Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina in the first round on Sunday.

McNally won the first set in a tiebreak and then had a match point in the second, but the Kazakh not only saved the match point but went on to win the set and force the decider. The American raced to a 4-0 lead in the third before Danilina got a break back, but she couldn’t wipe off the other break as McNally took the contest 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4.

Ranked 134th in the world, this was McNally’s first tour-level main draw win since her second round win over Nao Hibino in Nottingham in June.

This month, she lost to Sloane Stephens in the first round in San Jose and to Dayana Yastremska in the opening round in Cincinnati. She also featured in an ITF event in Pennsylvania, falling to Greet Minnen in the quarterfinal.
