This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Abanda, Looking to Build Momentum after a Long Pause

24-year-old Francoise Abanda is competing in just her fourth professional tournament in 2021.

The Canadian featured in a couple of ITF events in Rome and Orlando between January-February before stepping away from the action in subsequent months. She returned to the tour only in the Canadian Open a few weeks back where, as a qualifier, she lost her opening qualifying game to Caroline Garcia.

Currently ranked World No. 361, her best singles ranking stood at #111 – a peak she achieved in October 2017. She is yet to win a WTA singles title and the best runs of her career include second-round appearances in French Open and Wimbledon.

Here in Chicago, Abanda started as a wildcard and defeated Danka Kovinic 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round.

Mladenovic Beats Diyas

Kristina Mladenovic is off to a good start here in Chicago as she moved past Zarina Diyas in straight sets. The match, however, lasted for two hours and 13 minutes and saw the Frenchwoman fight hard in the second-set tiebreak. The number seven seed ultimately took the match 6-2, 7-6(3).

Currently ranked World No. 57, Mladenovic is looking to deliver a deep run in the competition before she competes in the US Open next week.

So far this season, the best she has done is reaching the third round in the Australian Open and quarterfinal in the WTA Lyon and Nottingham Open. The 28-year-old had also made it to the second round in the Italian Open as a qualifier, upsetting Belinda Bencic on the way.

Having peaked at World No. 10 on the singles circuit, Mladenovic is certainly capable of going the distance in Chicago. However, should she defeat Abanda here, she is likely to face the World No. 6 Elina Svitolina in the next round.

Mladenovic v Abanda Prediction and Tip

Mladenovic may not have been entirely consistent this year but for the time being, she shouldn’t face a lot of difficulties in beating Francoise Abanda. After all, she has the form and momentum on her side – something which the Canadian lacks at the moment.
