Vondrousova Hoping to Build on Olympic Success

At the moment, 22-year-old Marketa Vondrousova is ranked World No. 40 which is certainly a far cry from her previous best singles ranking of #14.

Her WTA season so far has been slightly underwhelming, seeing that she started the year inside the top 20. The Czech did show some promise in the opening few tournaments of the Yarra Valley Classic and the Australian Open as she reached the semifinal and the fourth round respectively.

Vondrousova also contested in the Miami Open and ended her campaign there in the fourth round after upsetting Belinda Bencic in the previous match.

Through glass and clay tournaments, however, her form took a sharp hit as she managed just one fourth-round appearance (French Open) in a total of seven competitions. In those remaining six events, Vondrousova lost in the early rounds.

But the silver medal at Tokyo Olympics – where she fell to Bencic in the final – did reignite some hopes of a strong comeback although, Vondrousova had the misfortune of losing to the Swiss once again in her opening match of the Cincinnati Open.

Now here in Chicago, she finds herself in a comfortable bracket with a comfortable path to the trophy. In the opener, she defeated Quinn Gleason 6-2, 6-0.

Van Uytvanck Dispatches Hibino

Alison Van Uytvanck had a comfortable start to her Chicago Open campaign as she defeated Nao Hibino 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round.

The 27-year-old Belgian has had a largely erratic season in 2021. Not only has she not played in that many tournaments, but whatever events she did feature in, she was beaten mainly in the early rounds.

In fact, Van Uytvanck went through a six-match losing streak stitched across the Australian Open, Madrid Open, WTA Saint-Malo, Serbia Open, Strasbourg Open, and French Open. It wasn’t until the Viking Open Nottingham on grass that she found some solace by reaching the quarterfinal.

The following week, she won the ITF $100,000 event at the same place to lift her first singles trophy of any kind since 2019 September.

Of late, the current world number 57 contested in the third round in the Olympics, the opening round of the Canadian Open and more recently, the WTA125 Chicago.
