Naomi Osaka v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Australian Open where Osaka carved out a straight set win in the opening round.

Osaka Has Something to Prove

Not very often can you say that about a multiple-time Grand Slam winner, and a world number three she has something to prove but Osaka will believe she does.

The defending champion opted out of French Open and Wimbledon for reasons to do with mental health following her refusal to do press conferences, and on her return to the sport, both at the Olympics and later in Cincinnati, Osaka struggled to get going.

At the former, she made it to the third round where she lost to Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets, while at Cincinnati Open she did well to overcome Cori Gauff in her opener only to go down to the unheralded Jil Teichmann.

Osaka has this tenacious capacity to turn things around when in the corner and while her current situation is anything but that, she will know she will have to up the ante coming into this tournament. In Bouzkova she has an opponent who could test her a tad which should help her cause for the later rounds too.

Bouzkova in Recent Hard Court Struggles

For a player who had begun the season with a third round appearance at Yarra Valley Classic, a final at the Phillip Island Trophy and another semifinal in Guadalajara, her performances have majorly dipped on hard court surfaces.

Since her first round loss at Wimbledon – obviously on grass – she has featured in five hard court competitions and won just one match. None in the main draw.

Her opening round defeats have come at the hands of Storm Sanders, Ana Konjuh, Maria Sakkari and Rebecca Peterson, leaving her with a lot of question-marks coming into the US Open.

And having never gone past the first round at US Open, it does look highly likely that record won’t be broken this time around either.

Osaka v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip

Osaka might be a tad rusty but Bouzkova might not prove to be too much of a challenge and the Japanese number one can be expected to win in straight sets.
